The Challenge
The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has been advocating for equality, education, and social justice for women and girls since 1919. For its 75th anniversary, the Oakville chapter commissioned a commemorative exhibit to honour its members, document its history, and share that story with a general audience at QE Park Community and Cultural Centre.
The exhibit also had to work within some real physical constraints. The venue was a long hallway with a track mounting system, plus fire alarms, doorways, and accessibility considerations that affected both legibility and hanging height. With 28 large-format timeline panels, 4 pull-up banners, 5 raised callout panels, and a historical quilt included in the display, spatial planning was just as important as the visual design.
The Approach
Working within CFUW’s established brand guidelines, I developed a cohesive visual system that carried across the different panel types: timeline panels, member profiles, and feature callouts. The content and historical research came together through CFUW and Halton Region Heritage Services, including interviews with featured members.
Before production began, I created a detailed spatial mock-up in Illustrator to map the exhibit within the venue. That planning tool gave the client, printer, and installation team a clear view of how everything would fit in the space, and where the physical constraints needed to be accounted for.
The historical archive also came with a familiar exhibition challenge: image quality varied widely. I used halftone fades and layered backgrounds to handle lower-resolution material in a way that felt deliberate, while keeping the panels visually consistent throughout.
The Result
The opening reception drew 80 to 90 members and guests, and the response was enthusiastic. Members were proud to see their organization’s history presented with care and clarity, and the exhibit was described as a first-class display that honoured the chapter beautifully.
